While reading this weeks Our Sunday Visitor, I came across an article regarding the Trappist Monks at Our Lady of Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, South Carolina and their chicken egg farm. Evidently they have been forced to cease what was their main source of income, growing eggs from chickens. PETA has been putting pressure on them to cease their egg production because they viewed their treatment of the chickens as inhumane. The abbey has been selling eggs from the chickens for 56 years. The income from the eggs generates about 60 percent of their income each year.
While I do think that animals should not be tortured and such, I do not think that raising chickens is inhumane. It seems that groups, such as PETA, consider animals a more worthy venture than the life of a human being. I would venture to say that many in PETA would just as soon save the life of a chicken than the life of an unborn child. It just seems to me that PETA has focused its efforts in the wrong place. The Monks are phasing out their chicken farm and are finding other ways to generate income. PETA should pressure the abortion mills to close because of their inhumane treatment of unborn children. PETA needs to reassess its priorities! When a chicken becomes more important than a human being, we have a problem.
I am reminded of a not long ago church sermon. What do you worship? It’s easy to see that PETA worships chickens and such.
God gave us this earth to enjoy, not destroy. And yes, I do think, when I get to heaven, I will be able to order a breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage, and of course grits. After all God is Great, and that means he is from South Carolina.
He also has a sense of humor or he would have done away with me a LONG time ago.
