The theme of today’s reading is regarding the hardening of our hearts towards God. The first reading has God commanding the Israelites to obey him so that they may prosper. Unfortunately the Israelites did not obey him and turned their backs on him. They hardened their hearts to God.
The responsorial Psalm has the Psalm writer asking the Israelites not to harden their hearts.
The Gospel is a little more subtle in how this theme is conveyed. Here we have Jesus performing a miracle and yet he is questioned and accused of being of the Devil. This is prophesied in the Psalm when it says: “Where your fathers tempted me; they tested me though they had seen my works.”
I think we can all learn from these writings that we must be obedient to what God commands us to do and not the harden our hearts toward Him. The new testament speaks of obedience as part of the saving Faith. Faith requires more than just acknowledgement of Jesus as Lord! It requires obedience to him. Let us not harden our hearts to Him. Let us pray to God that he may provide us with a loving and obedient Faith!
